How To Polish Your Speaking Skills: Its Time For T.i.p.s.
|
When requested to write an article about public speaking tips, I experienced an epiphany, of sorts. Now there's a word I've never written, let alone spoken! Many people will do just about anything to avoid public speaking. Or, you may have said "Who's got the time?" or "That's not good use of my time." Therein lies the epiphany; it's all about time!
**The best public speakers make the time to learn about theiraudience so that what they're saying is what the audience isinterested in hearing.
**The best public speakers know that timing is everything. They find out exactly what their speaking time allotment is,and then practice getting their timing right so they don'trun over or run short.
**The best public speakers appreciate the value of time out. They leave a "cushion" of time before and after they speak,to reduce stage fright.
**The best public speakers recognize the third time's a charm. On average you'll want to practice your presentation aloudthree times to work on your opening and closing, yournonverbal language and your intonation.
**The best public speakers are aware that time marches on.While the initial 30-60 seconds of a presentation seem likehours due to an elevated stress level, it quickly subsides asyou proceed with your purpose and remember that the audienceis there because they need what you have.
Finally, there's no time like the present to work on your T.I.P.S., which by the way represents Talking Is Public Speaking©. Every time you speak, it's a form of public speaking. If you want to develop your skills, I urge you to only seek input from an experienced and credentialed professional. Nothing less will do. Isn't it about time?

Public Speaking For Scaredy Cats
Business communications researchers have studied the phenomenon of stage fright experienced by would-be public speakers. Let me summarize most of the findings in very down-to-earth terms: Most people would rather die than stand up before an audience and deliver a speech. To suggest that these individuals are as "nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs" may be something of an understatement in describing these public speaking "scaredy cats." The symptoms are similar to food poisoning: a queasy feeling in the pit of one's stomach, shakes and jitters, and a sincere de...(related: Public Speaking)

How To Create A Compelling Media Kit
A well-built media kit is vital for effective marketing. Without it, all your promotional efforts could be wasted. You might be able to talk a good game and get the "hiring" company energized and excited about your speech presentations, but when they request your media kit and see a skimpy, unattractive, and uninformative package with only a couple of documents and nothing more, all that "talk" will have been for nothing!A brilliantly designed media kit is good, but although visual impact is important, your content is equally as important. Your media kit's value is in the information it provides and in its news worthiness.Whether you send yo...(related: Public Speaking)
Get Real
Humans are born storytellers, but our education system doesn't help us develop these natural talents that we all have. Instead, society increasingly homogenizes us, covering up the things that make us unique. The media, too, bombards us with messages that encourage us to emulate the celebrity of the week, or to try the latest fad. Most of us are far from real, far from that effective communicator inside us all.In our Excellence in Speaking Institute course we try to create the mindset t...(related: Public Speaking)
Take The Fear Out Of Public Speaking
You're a bright, dynamic executive. You've been scheduled to give a major company presentation. You're sitting in the audience waiting your turn to speak. You hear your name and start walking stiffly to the lectern.Suddenly you're all alone and everyone is looking at you. You're racked with symptoms of tension: Your hands are clammy, your knees feel wobbly, and your heart is pounding. You've developed a strange shortness of breath and your breakfast is staging an uprising. "If I can just get started," you tell yourself, "everything will be fine." So you open your mouth ? and out comes a sound that is a cross between a squeaking balloon and a bad cough.Twenty minutes later, you heave a sigh of relief and say weakly "Well, that's...(related: Public Speaking)
